Notes - Elizabeth Mure is a shadowy figure of whom little is known. At the time Elizabeth and Robert married, Robert was still only Earl of Strathearn; thus, although Elizabeth became Countess of Strathearn, she was never queen of Scots, since she died before her husband ascended the throne. From the fact that Robert married again in 1355, we must infer that Elizabeth had died by that date.
The Mure family had held the estate of Rowallan in Cunningham, Ayrshire, Scotland from the thirteenth century. Elizabeth bore Robert nine children. Their marriage was initially declared "non-canonical", that is, not recognized as valid by the Roman Catholic Church. The reason for this declaration is not recorded. Some speculate that it was because they married in the Celtic tradition rather than the Roman Church. However this could be mere modren romantic fondness for Celtic Christianity. Robert recognized this would cause him power troubles in the future, so, in 1347, he and Elizabeth married for a second time, but this time in the Catholic Church and papal dispensation legitmized their children.
Questions later arose about the validity of the legitimization and the children of Robert's second marriage contested the legitimacy of the later reigning House of Stewart.
