• Notes

  Alexander was named with his father in a Bond of Caution dated 13 September, 1621. Alexander allegedly died in 1692 although such a date is chronologically challenging. Some sources claim that Alexander was the father of Duncan Stewart and Alexander Stewart in Kilmadock -- two brothers born in the early 1600s who were soldiers captured at the Battle of Dunbar and sent to America as indentured servants, where Duncan later married Ann Winchurst and had a family in Massachusettes. Contemporary Appin researchers dispute that Duncan was the son of Alexander Stewart of Invernahyle and we are not aware of any research that confirms that Alexander was his brother. Current research on both of these men shows their origins as no more specific than somewhere in Scotland with unknown parents.
