- From my Glassingall notes:
Stewarts of Powblack in Frews and Rait
Alexander, father of Gen. Robert Stewart of Rait, currently shown as son of Charles, which I think is wrong. Better candidate is Alexander, b ca. 1710, son of Robert MD (son of John Stewart, 2nd of Annat)
Alexander's birth family is disputed. At present, the best candidate is that he is likely identical with Alexander Stewart in Grennock, son of Dr. Robert Stewart, younger son of Capt. John Stewart, 2nd of Annat.
While most published histories consistently give Robert Stuart of Rait's father's name as also Robert, Stewarts of the South identifies his father as "James Stewart of Boblach [in] Carse of Frews (Powblack of Frews)". However, the Kilmadock OPR shows his parents as Alexander Stewart in Powblack and Isobel Miller. MacGregor, citing Duncan Stewart 1739 and Stewarts of the South, says, "Robert Stuart of Rait, is said to be in descent from a son of Archibald Stewart, younger son of Alexander Stewart, 1st of Annat, but there is no evidence for that." MacGregor is correct that there is no evidence to show that the Stewarts of Rait descend specifically from a younger son of said Archibald Stewart. Stewarts of the South provides us with a portrait of Robert's birth family as the third family descending from the Stewarts of Annat, without specifying exactly how. Duncan Stewart 1739 mentions only the Stewarts of Glassingall as descending from Archibald, younger of Annat, but does not mention the Stewarts of Rait at all. The Glassingall Court of Session Papers (1849-1856) indicate that all the Stewart claimants for the estate of Glassingall assert descent from Capt. John Stewart (2nd) of Annat. The Stuarts of Rait were among the claimants.
Alexander is mentioned in the following reference in the Appendix of Stewarts of the South in which he is mistakenly referred to as "James Stewart in Boblach:" (Boblach and Powblack are two different spellings for the same place.)
"I think I wrote you something concerning the Stewarts of Tar*, before, and will do again if you think proper, though not in this paper. My reason for neglecting in description is [for] their being extinct, [all] but two daughters that are married and in very low circumstances. The late James Stewart of Tar father was in partnership with the late General Stewart of Raith's father in purchasing Oakwoods, which trade was not at that time taken by any but clever active men. He was called James Stewart of Boblach in the four and twenty farms of the Carse of Frews, in the Lordship of Doune, and was ground officer to the Earl of Murray. And should I have the pleasure of seeing you soon, I shall relate some fine anecdotes that passed between them, both of them being very active grasping men."
(*The Stewarts of Tar were a cadet branch of the Stewarts of Craigleven (Glenbuckie IV). They were not related to the Stewarts of Powblack, but lived nearby.)
