- Stewarts of the South is ambiguous in its reference for this Alexander. There are two entries: Alexander, son to Iain Dubh [was in] Duard [in] Glenfinglas [and] left three sons." A second entry follows reading: "Alastir mac Iain Duibh went to the isle of Arran and left a family there." These could be two entries for two Alexanders - father and son, or two entries for the same person. Our present interpretation is that they are two entries for the same person. Otherwise it would make Donald mac Iain Dubh a grandson of Iain Dubh rather than his son. Thus we suggest that this Alexander had three sons who may have been born in Duart before moving to Arran.
