• Notes

Elizabeth Stewart may be a sister to James Stewart of Tar. (No, his father, Duncan Stewart, was born in 1708. But she could be his father's sister, if she had a son, James from a previous relationship.) In 1799, Elizabeth's son, Alexander Stewart in Shenachyle, is identified as a tutor for the children of the deceased Alexander Stewart of Duniverig (son of James Stewart of Tar). As tutors are usually close relatives and as these two men are not paternally related, it is possible that this Alexander's mother, Elizabeth Stewart may be a sister to James Stewart of Tar. --- The deceased Alexander Stewart in Duniverig is mentioned in a 1799 legal action by Allan Stewart, flesher in Glasgow, in which his widow is named as Jean MacGregor and his children are identified as Duncan, John, James, Henry, Gregor and Alexander. The children had the following tutors - Alexander Stewart tenant in Shenachyle, and John McNab Writer to the Signet. (National Records of Scotland CS271/34341)
