- Duncan Stewart was born 26 Jan 1846 in Drunkie (also known as Invertrossachs) on the south shore of Loch Venachar in Port of Menteith parish, Perthshire, Scotland, as the son of Robert Stewart in Drunkie and Mary Stewart from Edraleachdach.
In 1851, at age 4, Duncan Stewart was residing at Little Mills, Kincardine-by-Doune, Perthshire, Scotland, with his widowed mother and siblings.
Duncan Stewart has not been found in 1861.
According to Mrs. Stewart of Milton's Account, "Duncan Stewart, my only brother, lived there [Duart] for some time with his uncle Alexander. Duncan left and went to live about Dunblane."
In 1871, at age 24, Duncan Stewart was residing at Auchnahard, Glenfinglas, Callander, Perthshire, Scotland, in the home of his paternal uncle Alexander Stewart, age 74 (Alexander Donnachaidh Stewart in Auchnahard). Duncan was employed as a farm servant.
In 1881, at age 36, Duncan Stewart was residing at Auchnahard, Glenfinglas, Callander, Perthshire, Scotland, in the home of his paternal uncle, Alexander Stewart, age 84, (Alexander Donnachaidh Stewart in Auchnahard) where Duncan was employed as a farm servant.
The Stewarts of Ardvorlich Vol 3 says that Duncan married Mary Liddon although no record of their marriage has been found.
In 1891, at age 45, Duncan Stewart was residing at Glenfinglas Farm House, Callander, Perthshire, Scotland, where he was employed as a farmer. This is likely the same farmhouse that previously belonged to his uncle, Alexander Stewart, who had no children, so it appears that Duncan may have inherited his uncle's farm. He was residing with 24 year old Mary A Leyden, b 1867 in Dunblane, Perthshire. She was employed as Duncan's housekeeper. Thus, it would appear that Duncan married his housekeeper.
In 1901, at age 45 (sic), Duncan Stewart was residing at Laighhill Road in Dunblane, Dunblane, Perthshire, Scotland, in the home of Jane Moore, where he was employed as a mason's labourer. Although his age is incorrect by ten years, the census entry specifies that he was born in Invertrossachs, which is correct. The informant for the census would have been his employer's wife, so it's likely that she was in error about his age.
