• Notes

Haldane Stewart's baptism was witnessed by James Wilson and Duncan Stewart. Haldane is described in Stewarts of the South as: "Haldane, [who] died in the East Indies and made a fortune there and left it [to his family]. He left two brothers in a great way there." He appears to be the same Haldane Stewart whose will is dated 1798: Haldane Stewart, merchant of Ely Place, Holborn in London. He had business dealings in Bengal. The will stated his father’s name was Robert Stewart and that Haldane had brothers named Robert (who perhaps had wife Mary at the point of the will in 1798), Patrick, and Colvin. Haldane also had two sisters named Anna and Lilias. It also stated that he left money to friends : an Alexander Colvin in Bengal, to William Stewart of Ardvorlich and his sister Mrs McNab, and to Margaret, Janet and Lilias Wilson, daughters of his good friend John Wilson of Murrayshall.
