• Notes

  Duncan was an illegitimate son of Catharine Stewart who was a prostitute in the village of Stirling. Duncan, like his sister, appears to have grown up apart from his mother. He is shown living with his sister in the 1881 census in Kincardine in the care of the Ferguson family, who are no known relation. (See notes on Duncan's sister, Isabella, for more details). In 1891 Duncan was working as a farm hand in Wester Borland, Port of Menteith, Perthshire, Scotland, for the family of John and Janet Hay. Duncan has not been found in the 1901 census and is presumed to have either died or emigrated.
