• Notes

James Stewart was born 17 Apr 1789 in Torrie, Kilmadock, Perthshire, Scotland, as a son of John Stewart and Sara Ferguson. His baptism was witnessed by James Stewart and John McNee, both in Torrie. James Stewart is a paternal uncle. John McNee's relationship to the family is unknown; he may be an uncle, possibly married to a sister of John Stewart. James Stewart is presumed to have married about 1810 in Perthshire, Scotland to Mary McKenzie although no record of their marriage has been found. They had six children, initially in Wester Torri and then in Broich in Kilmadock parish, Perthshire, Scotland. In 1841, at age 50, James Stewart was residing at North Lendrick, Deanston (Kilmadock), Perthshire, Scotland, with his wife and their daughter Robina (Binnie). He was employed as a wright (carpenter). (Broich is located on the Lendrick estate, so it is likely that their residence in 1841 was actually Broich.) On 14 Dec 1844, James Stewart's wife, Mary McKenzie, died. In 1851, at age 60, James Stewart was residing at Doune, Kilmadock, Perthshire, Scotland, with his daughter, Margaret Stewart. He was employed as a carpenter. In 1861, at age 69, James Stewart was residing alone at Main Street in Callander Village, Callander, Perthshire, Scotland. He was employed as a retired joiner (carpenter). In 1871, at age 80, James Stewart was residing alone at Main Street in Callander Village, Callander, Perthshire, Scotland. He was employed as a joiner. James Stewart died on 20 Mar 1876 in Callander Village, Callander, Perthshire, Scotland. His death registration reads: "James Stewart, wright, widower of Mary McKenzie, died March twentieth, 1876, in Callander Village, Callander, Perthshire, Scotland, at the age of 86, son of John Stewart, farmer, deceased, and Sarah Ferguson. Witness: John McGregor, in West Keys, Bridge of Allan, Perthshire, Scotland, nephew of the deceased." Mitchell's Monumental Inscriptions, Callander Cemetery: James Stewart, wright Lanrick, 20 Mar 1876, aged 87; in memory of wife Mary Mackenzie, 14 Dec 1844, aged 56.) --- There is a possibility that James Stewart may have resided in Inverkeithing, Fifeshire, Scotland for a period of time. In census records, James' son, John, consistently shows his place of birth as Inverkeithing, Fifeshire, despite having been born in Kilmadock, Perthshire, Scotland.
