• Notes

James Stewart is estimated to have been born about 1713 in Lianach of Glenbuckie, Balquhidder, Perthshire, Scotland as a son of James Stewart in Lianach, although no record of his birth has been found. His mother's name is unknown. He was born prior to thorough record keeping in the parish. James Stewart is described in Stewarts of the South as: "James, [a] tacksman of Wester Invernenty [in] Braes of Balquhidder, again of Bohelechan [in] Drymen parish. [He had] three sons living at Drymen [and who all had] families. Duke of Montrose’s work." The meaning of "again of" is unclear but is interpreted to mean "also of" or "latterly of" as he later appears to have acquired a tack of Bohalechan in Drymen parish and went to live there. James Stewart married on 29 Mar 1752 in Drymen, Stirlingshire, Scotland to Margaret McFarlane. It is probable that the marriage was also registered in Balquhidder parish however there are no marriages recorded in Balquhidder between 1741-1754. "1752, March 29, James Stewart in Balquhidder parish and Mary McFarlane in this parish listed etc." (Drymen Parish Register) This marriage taking place in Drymen aligns with the description in Stewarts of the South. James Stewart's children are identified in the Balquhidder parish register as follows. There was another contemporary James Stewart living in Wester Invernenty from the Stewarts in Tulloch. (Described in Stewarts of the South as: "James Stewart, late tenant of Wester Invernenty, Braes of Balquhidder, on the estate of the late Reverend Mr Stewart, had four sons who are all undertakers of road and other works about Glasgow.") James STEWART and Mary MCFARLANE (MCPHARLANE) in Inverlochlarig Mor, Tighnabruaich, and Wester Invernenty (married in Drymen) 1. Robert STEWART, bap. 1 JAN 1756 (recorded on 22 APR 1756) in Innerlochraigmor 2. Patrick STEWART, bap. 13 JUL1758 in Inverlochlaigvoir 3. John STEWART, bap. 8 SEP 1759 in Tighnabruaich* 4. James STEWART, bap. 13 JUN 1762 in Wester Innernenty 5. Patrick STEWART, bap. 16 APR 1768 in Tignabruaich* *Tigh na Bruaich means "house of the bank" and likely refers to a cottage on the Wester Invernenty property. It is presumed they moved from Wester Invernenty to Bohalechan between 1768 (when their last child was born in Balquhidder) and 1772 when their daughter Margaret was married in Drymen and Balquhidder.
