Thus it is suggested that the parish clerk made an error and reversed the surnames of the parents, and that this birth should be "James Stewart, son of Peter Stewart and Anne Ferguson."
There are only two Peter Stewarts in Callander parish having children at this time. The other Peter has been accounted for elsewhere and if this James Ferguson is really James Stewart, as suggested, then this family is a perfect match for the description in Stewarts of the South. It would appear that James' parents moved to Soldier's Land immediately after Duncan's birth and that James was born after the writing of Stewarts of the South.
