Notes - James appears to have prospered better than his "profligate" father, Duncan, who squandered his own father's wealth and reduced his entire family to poverty as subtenants on the Blair Drummond Moss, unable to even afford a lease of their own. James did the opposite. He seems to have raised himself out of poverty enough to at least be able to afford his own Moss lease and eventually even afford to hire a couple of servants.
