  John's name is uncertain. He is described in Stewarts of the South as "A writer in Stirling [who is] now dead also." Assuming that he was the eldest son and not just the eldest surviving son, then John would most likely have been named after his paternal grandfather, Iain Dubh na Sroan Stewart.
