- According to Devlin, John was styled "of Albany." John Stewart, was a witness to the charter for the half lands of Balindoran granted to his father by John Stewart of Darnley on 10 March 1457. (Gordon MacGregor, The Red Book of Scotland) This charter is difficult to reconcile chronologically as John was likely no more than about 12 or 13 years old at the time and too young to witness a charter. John's birth location is not known. He was born before his father acquired the lands of Baldorran in 1457, so he was likely born somewhere on his great-grandmother's lands of the Lennox.
