- John Stewart was created Earl of Buchan by his father Robert Stewart, Duke of Albany, Governor of Scotland (who was ruling in the place of the imprisoned King James I). John was also granted the earldom of Ross and later succeeded his father as Royal Chamberlain. In 1418, the Charles, the Dauphin of France requested Scottish aid against the English armies. John Stewart and his brother-in-law comanded the Scottish army in France. They were successful in their early battles and John Stewart was made Constable of France, and the Dauphin was crowned King Charles VII of France. It is possible that John Stewart fought alongside Joan of Arc, but further research will be needed to confirm this. The English army later retaliated and John Stewart fell at the battle of Verneuil. His death enabled King James I of Scotland to finally begin his reprisals against the Albany Stewart Clan.
