  John is not listed in Stewarts of the South as he was probably born around the time of writing. In 1851, at age 32, John Stewart was residing at Holytown, Bothwell, Lanarkshire, Scotland, as a boarder in the home of Margaret Forrest (70). He was employed as a shoemaker. In 1860, John Stewart witnessed his father's death registration. John was mentioned in his father's will as being a shoemaker in Holytown. In 1861, at age 42, John Stewart was residing by himself at Edinburgh and Glasgow Road, Holytown, Bothwell, Lanarkshire, Scotland. He was employed as a master shoemaker employing 6 men. In 1871, at age 51, John Stewart was residing by himself at Holytown, Bothwell, Lanarkshire, Scotland. He was employed as a shoemaker employing 4 men. In 1881, at age 63, John Stewart was residing at Holytown, Bothwell, Lanarkshire, Scotland, with his sister, Janet Stewart (66), and his maternal cousin John Stewart (24, born 2 Jun 1856, son of Robert Stewart and Hannah Canfield).
