• Notes

(See also the family of James Stewart in Kincardine by Doune who may be related to this family.) Patrick Stewart was born on 18 May 1750 in Wester Brackland, Callander, Perthshire, Scotland, as a son of Donald Stewart and Janet McBeath. Patrick Stewart married on 21 Nov 1779 in Kilmadock, Perthshire, Scotland to Mary McGregor. They had seven children in Daldorn/Daldoran and Torrie. These properties are next to each other and straddle the Kilmadock/Kincardine parish boundary. (Daldorn in Kilmadock and Daldoran in Kincardine by Doune are the same property. There is an extension portion of Kincardine by Doune parish that existed within the bounds of Kilmadock parish. Thus, this property is recorded in both parishes. There is no other contemporary Patrick/Peter Stewart found in either the Kilmadock or Kincardine parish registers.) Patrick and his family then moved to Arasaig Mor in Lochaber, Inverness-shire, Scotland, where they lived at a farmstead known as Glengarten. Patrick Stewart is described in Stewarts of the South as: "Patrick is in Glengartan in Arasaig mor, [which is] a farm for which he pays £300 or £400 a year [to] Clan Ronald. [He] has four sons." Arisaig/Arasaig Mor is a large manor house near Keppoch in Arasaig in Lochaber, Inverness-shire, Scotland which belonged to Clan Ranald in the 18th century. Glengarten has not been located on maps but was presumably a smaller farmstead on the Arasaig Mor estate. Patrick Stewart is listed as having four sons. Only three are confirmed in the Kilmadock and Kincardine parish registers. His son James, shown here, is recorded as being born in Daldoran as the son of Patrick Stewart and Janet McGregor, not Mary McGregor. This is the only child of that couple. It's more likely to be an error by the parish clerk than to be a different couple with nearly identical names living in the same place. The fact that sons Daniel and James were baptised less than a month apart suggests that they may have been twins and baptised separately to distinguish precedence for later heredetary rights. It's not known if Patrick Stewart had more children after moving to Arasaig in Lochaber. Large migrations from the Arasaig area ended up in Nova Scotia and Ontario, Canada in the 19th century.
