The "pedantic coxcomb" is believed to refer to the author of Stewarts of the South himself. Patrick is described in the Fasti Ecclesia as: "Patrick Stuart, born 2nd April 1747, son of preceding; licensed by the Presbytery 6th October 1778; presented by John, Earl of Breadalbane in June and ordained (assistant and successor) 27th October 1779; died 18th May 1795.
