• Notes

Duncan Stewart is estimated to have been born about 1670 in Strone on the north shore of Loch Katrine in Upper Strathgartney, Callander, Perthshire, Scotland, as the only known son of Walter Stewart in Strone. Duncan Stewart is known to us only by his testament dated 1710 in which he is identified as having a surviving wife, Janet Stewart, and two surviving children, John and Mary. The children's grandfather, Walter Stewart, was still alive and was acting as tutor to the children. It is presumed that Walter was Duncan's father, not Janet's father. As only two children are named, this would appear to indicate that John was young when he died. Thus, we estimate his birth to be c. 1670. The testament lists the livestock that are to be sold off and it appears there is a joint interest with Robert Stewart of Auchnahard (likely Janet Stewart's father or brother). There are some other interesting mentions, including Duncan Murray in Monachyle, John McLean in Mull and also possibly William Macdonald, brother of Sir Donald McDonald of Sleat (Skye). As Duncan Stewart would almost certainly have named his first son Walter, then we suggest he likely had such a son who died prior to 1710. As the births of their children predate the commencement baptism registrations in the parish of Callander, the dates of birth for the children are merely estimate.
