• Notes

  Robert immigrated to Canada with his parents and was raised in Puslinch. According to a later Puslinch historian, Robert sold his farm for a yolk of oxen and moved to Guelph -- for which act he was later described as "a useless son". In 1861 Robert was working as a farm labourer on the farm of Robert Dunn (Robert's sister, Mary Stewart's father-in-law). Robert's future wife, Lydia Simmons, was working on the same farm. In 1871, Robert was working on his brother Hugh's farm in Puslinch. In 1881, Robert is shown as a widower living in Puslinch, and working as a labourer on his brother Hugh's farm. (Surname recorded as "Stuart".) 1901 census - He is believed to be the Robert Stewart recorded as born 10 May 1830 in Scotland, widower. Robert Stewart, died January 3, 1907, aged 76 years and 7 months in Puslinch, Wellington, Ontario, Canada and is buried in Crown Cemetery. He died of chronic nephritis (kidneys). His death was attested by his son, Hugh Stewart.
