In 1881 Margaret was living in Hamilton with her sister and brother-in-law, Mary & Hugh Stewart, along with two of her brothers, David and Robert. Robert Tait and Hugh Stewart were partners in Tait & Stewart Grocers.
Granddaughter Margaret Stewart Ritter described her as "a tiny peaceable woman, with huge sunken eyes, and a long mane of thick wavy gray hair done up in a bun. Her feet were so small that she never could find women's shoes to fit her, so always wore black patent-leather slippers in little girl's sizes -- the kind of shoes that used to be called "Mary Jane's". She ruled her masculine household with gentle iron, was always dererred to and respected. She seldom showed her affection for anyone -- a pat on the head or shoulder was the most she would allow herself."
