  Jane Eliza Tait was born in 1869 in Elora, Wellington, Ontario, Canada. She is found with her parents in 1871 and 1881. In Decmeber 1885, her family immigrated to Washington State, USA. Jane would have been 15 years old at the time. After immigration she went by the name Bessie Jane Tait. Her father was the founder of the Tacoma Business College in Tacoma, Washington, USA. Bessie wroked at her father's college as a teacher of shorthand and typewriting, as noted in an 1895 directory listing for Tacoma. In 1890, 1891, 1892, 1893 Bessie is listed in the Tacoma Directory as a teacher of shorthand and typewriting at the Tacoma Business College. In the 1892 Washington State Territorial Census, Bessie was residing in Tacoma, Pierce, Washington, USA with her parents and siblings. All members of the family were employed as teachers except Maude who was a student. In 1900, Bessie was residing in Chicago, Cook, Illinois, USA with her widowed mother and younger sister. She was employed as a teacher. Her borther John L Tait and his family lived next door. In 1910, at age 33 (sic, actually 41), Bessie was residing on Belden Ave in Chicago, Cook, Illinois, USA with her widowed mother and sister. She was unemployed.
