• Notes

  Ethelred became known as "the Unready", however his appellation was really "Unraed", which meant "without counsel". He succeeded his half-brother, Edward the Martyr as King of England in 978. He later abdicated in favour of King Sweyn in 1013 and fled to Normandy. He was restored as King of England on the death of Sweyn in 1014.
