• Notes

Donald McFarlane is identified in the baptisms of his son John McFarlane as "Donald McFarlane in Duncraggan." In the baptisms for all his other children he is identified as "Donald McOmish in Duncraggan." McOmish is a patronymic nickname for Donald's branch of the McFarlane family. It translates litterally to "son of Thomas" but as a clan patronymic, it should be interpretted as "descendants of Thomas." Thus it likely does not refer to Donald's father, but rather to the progenitor of this branch of the McFarlane family.
