  From the Weekly Clarion, Jackson, Mississippi, September 18, 1873: OBITUARY. Entered into rest on the 26th of August, at Newport, R.I., in her 42d year, MRS. AMANDA YERGER, wife of James D. Stewart, Esq., of this city. The departure from the scene of her earthly joys and sorrows of one so widely know and so universally esteemed, calls for more than a mere announcement. It is rare indeed that much worth and so many excellencies are found united in any single character. Not to speak of what she was in her own home and the overwhelming bereavement which they have sustained, who had so long looked to her for their earthly happiness, our whole community feels and mourns her loss. Society had no brighter ornament, and there have been but few anywhere who have more truly lived to the glory of God by serving Him faithfully and doing good in their generation. Having kept the faith, having adorned the profession of her Lord and Savior in all things and having been made perfect through severe and prolonged sufferings, which she bore without a murmur, when told that the time of her departure was at hand, simply said, "I am ready,",and, in quietness and confidence, passed away to that eternal home for which her whole life had been a constant preparation. None that knew her can be insensitive to the blessing of such a life as hers. Even in our grief we are constrained to thank God for such a beautiful, consistent and attractive exemplification of our holy religion; and at the same time we can but breathe the humble prayer that the mantle which seemed to have descended upon her from her dear and venerated father may fall upon the beloved ones whom she has left behind, and that, following her in all virtuous and godly living, they may join with her the company of the faithful in Paradise, and may come at length lo those unspeakable joys which God has prepared for all that love Him and walk in His holy ways.
