  Donald Ferguson was born 17 Mary 1846 in Balquhidder, Perthshire, Scotland, as the illegitmate son of Alexander Ferguson in Stronvar and Jean Stewart in Kirkton. "Donald first lived at Stronvar Cottage in Balqhuidder. Then, when his family grew bigger, he moved to Gartnafuaran Cottage. He spoke fluent Gaelic and was very good at building dry stone walls." (descendant Sharon Owens) In 1851, at age 4, Donald Ferguson was residing in Balnluig on the Stronvar estate in Balquhidder, Perthshire, Scotland, with his father, Alexander Ferguson (40), a sawyer, and his uncle John Ferguson (52), a journeyman mason. Also living with them was Margaret Stewart (35), b. 1816 in Balquhidder, household servant to John Ferguson; Andrew Mcfarland (22), b. 1829 in Callander, a lodger and a journeyman mason; William Stewart (26), b. 1825 in Callander, a lodger and journeyman joiner (carpenter). In 1861, at age 14, Donald Ferguson was residing at Stronvar in Balquhidder, Perthshire, Scotland, with his father, Alexander Ferguson (51), and his uncle, John Ferguson (60), a mason, and his aunt Agnes Ferguson (60), a domestic servant. On 26 Nov 1869, Daniel Ferguson, age 21, a joiner, son of Alexander Stewart, a joiner, and Jean Stewart, married in Kilmadock, Perthshire, Scotland, to Ann Fraser, age 26, a domestic servant, daughter of Alexander Fraser and Margaret Elder. The wedding was witnessed by Daniel's uncle, John Stewart. In 1871, at age 24, Daniel Ferguson was residing in Stirling, Stirlingshire, Scotland with his wife Ann and their children Williamina 3 and Margaret 10 months.
