Notes |
- Donald is believed to be the Captain of the packet ship Harwich.
"His eldest sister was apparently married to a Stewart of “Auchrail” (but no names). He may have had at least two more sisters, and a brother. This information - including the “Auchrail” was found in an 1844 letter in the Ballachulish papers placed on EBay. A search of the National Archives came upon a Donald Stewart in Harwich whose will revealed he had a sister Ann Stewart married to a James Stewart in Scotland (hooray - sounds like a match for the parents of the Castle Cottage spinsters), and another sister Isabella Stewart whose married name was Reid. I believe the Isabella, sister of Captain Donald, who married a Reid may have ended up in Dundee (a James Reid, shoemaker, married an Isabel Stewart and had children James, May and Thomas). The will of Captain Donald is dated 1810 and had a codicil that notes that Isabel had been widowed. This tallies with a James Reid being buried in Dundee 1809. A Captain Donald Stewart in Harwich, and of the Lord Nelson, died in 1810. I have since found out the Lord Nelson was a packet (postal) ship that went backwards and forwards between Harwich and Holland." (Siuna Sine - Stewarts of Balquhidder Research Group)
