Notes - Charles E. Stewart is mentioned in the wills of his father and mother. He is also mentioned in the will of his grandfather, Charles Stewart, as his designated heir.
After the death of his father, Charles was placed in the custody of his maternal grandfather (or uncle), John Netterville. Later census records indicate that the estate he inherited was worth about $150,000 (about $5.5 million in 2024).
Charles E Stewart is mentioned in a slave ad: "Stewart, Charles E (minor heir): The slave Ham was to be sold by John Netterville guardian of Charles E. Stewart, May 3rd at public auction." (Wilkinson Republican 23 April 1836)
