- 28 Apr 1754, Archibald, son of John, STEWART and Jean, MCULLOCH in Earn. Witt. Archibald and Robert McUllochs in Deanstoun. (Kilmadock OPR)
Stewarts of the South says:
"Archibald Stewart, a merchant of Stirling, has likewise a strong family. They were for a long time residents on a farm near Doune, called the Deanston. John Campbell, who built the George Inn [in] Perth was married to one of these women and likewise his uncle who was vintner at the foot of the Highstreet [in] Perth to an aunt of his. There are some more through the country of whom I have no proper account at present, nor can I remember them."
Archibald matriculated from Glasgow University in 1773 - “Archibaldus Stewart, filius natu secondus Joannis, Agricolae in parochia de Kilmadock & Comitatu de Perth.” (The Matriculation Albums of the University of Glasgow from 1728-1858, https://archive.org/details/matriculationalb00univuoft/page/200/mode/2up)
Stewarts of the South and the Kilmadock OPR show only one possible candidate for Archibald Stewart. He is the first son of John Stewart and Jean McCulloch in Earn and Muirhead. However, since his matriculation listing cites him as the “second son” of John Stewart, then his father must have had a prior family, which is shown here.
Archibald Stewart and his half-brother Alexander Stewart in Muirhead of Deanston are found witnessing several extended family baptisms in the Kilmadock parish records.

According to Stewarts of the South, Archibald Stewart had a “strong family” in Stirling. The following three households are the only births in Stirlingshire for a father named Archibald Stewart between 1770-1820. Two of these households have an eldest son named John. Only one has an eldest daughter named Jean, thus fully matching onomastics. And only one could be described as a “strong family,” namely the same family that matches onomastics. Thus, the only family who matches the full description is the family of Archibald Stewart and Mary McCara (below). However the Stirling OPR has not been consulted for confirmation.
