• Notes

  I have no factual proof of the parentage of Martin Clausen Hamilton. He does not show up in the 1851 census and is presumed dead before the 1861 census where his wife Agnes Gamble is with Robert Davidson with their two children Ezra and Jane (shows Davidson as their last name). However, through a lot of research I have come up with the following reasons why I believe that Ezra Hambleton and Lavina Wilson are his parents: 1. The naming patterns in families tend to name the first born son after the father, hence Ezra, son of Martin C. Hamilton and Agnes Gamble, after Martin's father Ezra Hambleton. 2. When Ezra Jr. leaves with his wife Rachel Young and children to move to Michigan, USA, he changes the spelling of his last name to Hambleton and uses that in further census in the USA. 3. In the state census of Linn, Iowa, Ezra Jr. states his father's name as Clausen Hamilton, which I would say is his middle name since when both Ezra and his sister Jane were married it said the father was Martin C. Hamilton. In the Wilson family tree which would be Martin's mother's family, Mary Clawson is Rachel Drake Wilson's direct ancestor. Also Jane Hamilton Ezra's sister married John Robertson Aitchison and their grandchild was named Benjamin Clawson Stevenson. So a continuation of the name "Clawson" in it's various spellings. 4. In one of the family trees on LDS Closson was listed as a son of Ezra Hambleton and Lavina Wilson but no further information was given. I would say since Martin was born before the 1851 census and died before 1861 that he was never listed in any census but was living in the Brant/Oxford area. The Hambleton family was in this area as Amy Hambleton which would be Ezra Sr.'s daughter and Martin's sister was born in Dumfries Township in 1835 and Ezra Jr. names a daughter Amy. 5. I found an article about the building of the Paris/Ayr Road and it names the men that were helping and Closson Hamilton is one of them. He would have been in that area about 1849. I believe this to be Martin. Agnes Gamble his wife also lives in further census in the Princeton/Drumbo area with Robert Davidson and marries him in 1872.
