  John Stewart's exact date and location of birth is unknown. As an adult he resided in Coldoch and Earn in Kilmadock parish, Perthshire, Scotland. No birth record has been found for him in Kilmadock parish. Coldoch Estate is located in Kilmadock parish south and west of Doune and just north of Frew. Its property crosses into Kinardine parish. Stewarts of the South does not mention John Stewart by name. It mentions his son, Archibald, and says that the family belonged to the Stewarts of Ballechin. They are shown as Line 2 of the family which precedes with James Stewart in Kilbride, but the exact relationship between the two lines is not identified. Kilmadock parish records confirm that the Archibald Stewart mentioned in Stewarts of the South is John Stewart in Coldoch and Earn. Stewarts of the South says: "Archibald Stewart, a merchant of Stirling, has likewise a strong family. They were for a long time residents on a farm near Doune, called the Deanston. John Campbell, who built the George Inn [in] Perth was married to one of these women and likewise his uncle who was vintner at the foot of the Highstreet [in] Perth to an aunt of his." Stewarts of the South indicates that John's family belonged to the Stewarts of Ballechin. As such, he was probably born near Ballechin in Logierait parish in Perthshire, Scotland and moved to Kilmadock as a young man. No match has been found for him among the documented descendants of the Stewarts of Ballechin in the Red Book of Scotland. He is likely from an undocumented lesser line. John's son, Archibald's matriculation record from the University of Glasgow indicates that Archibald was the second son of John Stewart, a farmer in Kilmadock. Kilmadock parish records show Archibald as the eldest on of John Stewart and Jean McCulloch. As his matriculation entry says he was the second son of his father, then John Stewart must have had a prior relationship by which he had a son. Parish records show that he had a prior family with Katharine Graeme by which he had two sons, James and Alexander. Later parish records show Archibald and Alexander Stewart in Muirend of Deanston witnessing the baptisms of several of John Stewart's grandchildren. From these entries we can conclude that John's son, James, did not survive, and that Alexander Stewart from John's first relationship is the half-brother of Archibald Stewart who is mentioned in Stewarts of the South. In 1739, John Stewart in Coldoch witnessed the baptism of the child of Susan Stewart and Moses Thomson, believed to be his sister. John Stewart in Coldoch and Earn had relations firstly with Katharine Graeme. No marriage has been found for them in Kilmadock parish. With her, he had six children. Between 1749-1754, Katharine Graeme died. In 1754, John Stewart is found in Earn, Kilmadock, Perthshire, Scotland, having a family with Jean McCulloch. No marriage record has been found for them. They had eight children together. From Stewarts of the South, we can infer that one of John Stewart's daughters was married to the uncle of John Campbell who built the George Inn in the town of Perth. The uncle was a vintner on the High Street in Perth.
