• Notes

A year after Jeanette Black and her husband, John Black arrived in Canada West in1833, her parents Hugh Black and Elizabeth Gilmour and her many siblings settled in Fergus. Hugh and Elizabeth ran an inn and tavern which catered to new immigrants. The inn was the social centre of the nascent community. It served as a post office and and news source. Around 1842 the family moved out of the inn and into Craighead, a limestone farm house built on 100 acres of land. Craighead is a designated historic building in Fergus. Recently, the town has decided to allow visiting health care professionals to live in Craighead Cottage. It is heartening to know that a home built by our ancestors will be welcoming newcomers.
