INQUESTS IN BELFAST. The deputy coroner (Mr. J. S. Finnigan) held an inquest yesterday in the Laganbank Morgue concerning the death of James Muir, on the 23rd December, at 15 Methmen Street. Agnes Muir deposed that she was the wife of the deceased, who was forty years of age, and had been a fitter to trade in the employment of Messrs. Workman, Clark, & Co., Limited. About three months ago he got a cut in his wrist, and he had not been at work for five weeks. When going to bed the previous night he felt his arm sore, and she made a shakedown for him in the corner of the bedroom. Early that morning she heard him moaning. Dr. Erskine was called in, but when he arrived life was extinct. The deceased took drink to excess. Dr. Robert Erskine stated that some four weeks ago he treated the deceased for the wound to the wrist. The last time he saw him was on November 26th. That morning he was called in about 1-30 o'clock, and he saw the body in an upper room. The house was destitute of furniture. The deceased was lying on a wisp of straw in a corner. From a post-mortem examination he believed the cause of death was syncope from fatty heart induced by chronic alcoholism. The coroner commented on the shocking state of affairs disclosed, and said it was hardly credible. The deceased had been earning 38s per week constantly, and should with such wages and for one in his position of life have been enjoying absolute luxury. Instead, however, of devoting his earnings to the purchase of the necessities of life, not to speak of comfort, he had been in the habit of squandering it on drink. He pitied the unfortunate widow and children from his heart. They were left utterly destitute, and he trusted that Mr. Rea, with his usual kindness, would represent the facts to the employers, with a view to some small sum being given to the widow to tide her over Christmas. The jury found in accordance with the medical evidence. (Newspaper article source not identified by uploader.)
