Notes - **This family is very similar in description to their neighbours, the family of Andrew Stewart in Back Borland and Margaret McFarlane, who resided half a mile away at Gartencaber near Milton of Buchanan.**
Andrew Stewart was born 24 Feb 1790 at Mill of Drummond (Mill of Drummit), Drymen, Stirlingshire, Scotland, as the eldest son of Agnes/Katherine McKay.
Stewarts of the South, about 1815, refers to a James Stewart being a vintner in Gartmore who later moved to Buchanan which fits the description of Andrew Stewart. It's possible that the author of Stewarts of the South made a mistake about the name of the vintner and that it should be Andrew, not James. Or the following entry may refer to a James Stewart whose life was parallel. "Mr James (sic Andrew?) Stewart, vintner [in] Gartmore, of the Gartnafuaran family, £20. But [he] is going at Whitsunday to Buchanan, to an excellent situation, where he will be both vintner and miller at the same time. [He is] a stout [and] valiant young man, but of the low country cast (he acts more like a Lowlander, than a Highlander). James (sic Andrew?) Stuart, [a] Miller [at] Cubail-Larach [in] Drymen parish, [who] has five sons [who are] the stoutest and most able man in that country - one of them, Jas (James, sic Andrew?), [is] an innkeeper in Gartmore."
Sometime prior to 1817, Andrew Stewart moved to the nearby village of Gartmore in Port of Menteith parish, Perthshire, Scotland, nearby to where his mother's family came from, where he became an innkeeper.
Andrew Stewart married on 25 Oct 1817 in Drymen, Stirlingshire, Scotland to Margaret Marshall. Their marriage was also registered on the following day in Port of Menteith, Perthshire, Scotland. "1817 Oct 26 - Andrew Stewart in this parish (Port of Menteith) and Margaret Marshall in the parish of Drymen." (Port of Menteith Parish Register)
On 21 Jun 1818, Andrew Stewart and Margaret Marshall had their first child, a son named Walter, in Gartmore, Port of Menteith, Perthshire, Scotland. Andrew Stewart was identified as an innkeeper at Gartmore on the baptism registration.
Shortly after the birth of their first child, Andrew Stewart and Margaret Marshall moved to Milton of Buchanan in Buchanan parish, Stirlingshire, Scotland, where the remainder of their children were born and where they remained for the remainder of Andrew's life.
In 1841, at age 51, Andrew Stewart was residing at Milton of Buchanan, Buchanan, Stirlingshire, Scotland, with his wife and children. He was employed as a farmer.
In 1851, at age 60, Andrew Stewart was residing at Milton of Buchanan, Buchanan, Stirlingshire, Scotland, with his wife and children. He was employed as farmer of 30 acres. Also residing with them was Alexander McGregor (age 21) who was working for Andrew as a farm servant. Alexander would later marry Andrew's daughter, Janet.
Andrew died on 12 Jun 1852, at age 62, at Milton of Buchanan, Buchanan, Stirlingshire, Scotland. He is buried in the Buchanan parish cemetery. His gravestone reads: "In memory of Andrew Stewart, innkeeper Milton, died 12 June 1852, 62, by wife Margaret Marshall." (Mitchell's Monumental Inscriptions)
Following his death most of his children emigrated -- some to Austalia and others to America.
