  John Stewart was born in 1823 in Kippen, Stirlingshire, Scotland, probably at Bucklyvie, where his father was a farmer. In 1841, at age 17, John Stewart was residing at Buchlyvie, Kippen, Stirlingshire, Scotland, with his parents and siblings. In 1842, at age 19, John Stewart immigrated to Canada. His young age suggests that he likely followed an earlier family member (possibly his uncle John Stewart). By 1851, he had settled on a farm in Carluke, Ancaster, Wentworth, Ontario, Canada. Various records show this family residing at times in Carluke and Ancaster in Wentworth county. Carluke is in Ancaster so these differing references likely refer to the same residence. In 1851, at age 27, John Stewart was residing in Ancaster, Wentworth, Ontario, Canada, as a bachelor. He was employed as a mill wright. John is presumed to have married about 1858 in Carluke, Ancaster, Wentworth, Ontario, Canada, to Janet Harvey, although no record of ther marriage has been found. She was born in nearby Nelson, Halton, Ontario, Canada (future Burlington), but her father was originally from Kippen, Stirlingshire, Scotland, so the two families likely knew each other from back in Scotland. In 1861, at age 35, John Stewart was residing in Ancaster, Wentworth, Ontario, Canada, as a bachelor. He was employed as a mechanic in a saw and grist mill worth $4500. Between 1862-1865, John Stewart moved his family from Carluke in Ancaster to Onondaga in Brant. However as Carluke is on the border with Onondaga, it's possible that the family didn't move but the boundary was changed. In 1871, at age 48, John Stewart was residing in Onondaga, Brant, Ontario, Canada, with his wife and children. He was employed as a farmer. In 1881, at age 36 (sic, s/b 56), John Stewart was residing at Onondaga, Brant, Ontario, Canada, with his wife and children. He was employed as a farmer. In 1891, at age 66, John Stewart was residing in the city of Brantford, Brant, Ontario, Canada, with his wife and their large family. He was employed as a farmer. (The location of "Brantford" is likely an anomoly related to how the census was taken that year and doesn't likely represernt a move into and later out of the city, especially as John was recorded as a farmer while living in the city. It's likely that they lived in Onondaga the entire time.) In 1901, at age 77, John Stewart was residing in Onandaga, Brant, Ontario, Canada, with his wife and children. He was employed as a farmer. John died in 1903 and is buried at the St. Paul's Presbyterian Church cemetery, Carluke, Ancaster, Wentworth, Ontario, Canada. John Stewart and his family attended St. Paul's Presbyterian Church in Carluke, Wentworth, Ontario, Canada (just south of the city of Hamilton) where most of them are also buried.
