Notes - David Stewart was born about 1793 in Perthshire, Scotland (according to his gravestone), although no record of his birth has been found. He is believed to be the son of John S. Stewart, but this is not confirmed. David was born in Perthshire, is the right age to be a son of John S. Stewart and named his first son, John, and his second daughter, Elizabeth, which accords exactly with the traditional Scottish naming custom. David later immigrated to the same location in Canada as the family of John S. Stewart. However, John S. Stewart did not marry until 1796, so, if David was his son, then he was illegitimate.
David Stewart is believed to be the one who married on 1 Nov 1810 in Logierait, Perthshire, Scotland, to Elizabeth Reid and had children in Caputh and in the town of Perth in Perthshire, Scotland.
In 1841, at age 40, David Stewart was residing in the town of Perth, Perthshire, Scotland, with his wife and children. He was employed as a labourer.
Sometime between 1841-1848, David Stewart immigrated with his wife and children to Canada where they settled in Strabane, West Flamborough, Wentworth, Ontario, Canada. They lived just a few houses away from Charles Stewart who was a son of John Stewart, a widower in nearby Mountsberg in East Flamborough. Mountsberg is about 5 km (3 mi.) from Strabane.
In 1848, David and Elizabeth's 17-year-old daughter Grace Stewart died and was buried in Strabane, West Flamborough, Wentworth, Ontario, Canada.
In 1851, at age 60, David Stewart was residing in West Flamborough, Wentworth, Ontario, Canada, with his wife and adult children Margaret, John, Elizabeth, and Ellen. David was a Baptist and was employed as a farmer. They were living within a couple of houses of the following people:
William Stewart, age 60, born in Scotland, farmer, Free Church.
Archibald Stewart, age 47, born in Scotland, farmer, Free Church; William S. Stewart, 26, born in Scotland, labourer on his father's farm, Free Church; and Mrs. M. Stewart, 51, born in Scotland, independant.
