- Alexander Stewart was born about 1767 in Callander, Perthshire, Scotland. No birth record has been found for him. He is suggested to be the son of Robert Stewart in Allanabreck, but this is not confirmed. If correct, it is not known if his mother was Janet MacOmash, however, onomastics would suggest that she is.
According to Stewarts of the South:
"Alexander, [a] tacksman [in] Invernenty [in] Braes of Balquhidder. [He had] one son: Robt, a cottager [in] Allanabreak [in] Aberfoil who hath one son: a shoemaker in Callendar."
The 1851 census shows Alexander Stewart, born about 1767 in Callander, Perthshire, Scotland, residing at 5 Bridge End in the village of Callander and employed as a retired shoemaker. There are several shoemakers identified in Stewarts of the South. The one above is the only one identified as residing in Callander and his grandfather was named Alexander. From these entries compared to parish records the family shown here can be reconstructed.
In 1841, an Alexander Stewart, age 70, was residing at Bridge End in the village of Callander, with 60 year old Catharine Stewart, and 20 year old Alexander Stewart. This matches the location and approximate ages with the 1851 census and suggests a possible wife for Alexander, named Catharine. The following baptisms can be found for Alexander Stewart and Catharine Stewart in Callander village:
- 25 Jul 1825, Peter, son of Alexander STEWART and Catharine STEWART in Callander
- 28 Dec 1827, Christian, daughter of Alexander STEWART and Catharine STEWART in Callander
- 15 Mar 1830, James, son of Alexander STEWART and Catharine STEWART in Callander
- 15 Mar 1832, Donald, son of Alexander STEWART and Catharine STEWART in Callander
While the four children shown here for Alexander Stewart can all be found in census records, no matching baptismal records have been found for any of them. This may suggest that they were either Anglican or Roman Catholic and were not baptized in the Church of Scotland.
No members of this family have been found after 1851. It seems likely that they emigrated.
