Notes - Marion/Marjory Stewart was born 1 SEP 1822 in Port of Menteith, Perthshire, Scotland as the daughter of David Stewart and Janet McMillan. She is found in later census records with her mother. Her death record identifies her father's name as Duncan Stewart, however death records are only as reliable as the informant, who was her son, Alexander. David is also a known substitute name for Duncan. There is only one birth in Port of Menteith parith betweeen 1820-1825 with a father surnamed Stewart and a mother named Janet McMillan and it is this birth, however, her name is given as Mary. As Marjory is never found in census records with her father, and as her mother is always identified by her maiden name, then it is believed, but not confirmed, that Marjory was illegitimate.
Marjory's father is believed to be David Stewart in Auchensalt and Yonkers. He is the only contemporary David Stewart found in any Port of Menteith or Aberfoyle parish records. He was married to Marian Kay and moved to Yonkers, New York, USA between 1835-1840, when Marjory would have been a young teenager.
In 1841, at age 15, Marion Stewart was residing at #1 Garnabrind, Port of Menteith, Perthshire, Scotland, with her mother, Janet McMillan (45), and her maternal grandmother, Susan McMillan (85).
In 1851, at age 27, Marjory Stewart was residing at Stonefield, Port of Menteith, Perthshire, Scotland, in the home of her mother, Janet McMillan. Marjory was employed as a dressmaker. Her future husband was also residing at Stonefield in another house.
In 1861, at age 40, Marjory Stewart was at Stonefield, Port of Menteith, Perthshire, Scotland with her husband and children. Her mother was also living with them.
In 1871, at age 47, Marion Stewart was residing at Cobleland on the Gartmore estate in Aberfoyle, Perthshire, Scotland, with her husband and children. Her 75 year old mother was also living with them.
In 1881, at age 56, Marjory Stewart was residing at Cobleland, Aberfoyle, Perthshire, Scotland with her husband and children John and Maggie.
In 1891, at age 65, Marjory Stewart was residing at Cobleland, Aberfoyle, Perthshire, Scotland, with her husband and daughter, Margaret.
In 1901, at age 76, Marjory Stewart was residing at Cobleland, Aberfoyle, Perthshire, Scotland, with her husband and spinster daughter Margaret (35).
On 13 June 1903, Marjory Stewart died at Cobleland, Aberfoyle, Perthshire, Scotland. Her parents names were given as Duncan Stewart (Labourer) and Janet McMillan. The informant was her son Alexander. He is believed to have been in error about the name of his mother's father as he likely never knew his grandfather.
---
There is a contemporary David Stewart and Janet McMillan in Argyll, but they cannot be the same couple as they were married in 1826 (4 years after Marjory's birth) and are found in 1861 in Durham, Ontario, Canada, while Marjory's mother, Janet McMillan was residing with her daughter in Scotland at the same time.
