• Notes

Duncan Stewart is estimated to have been born abt 1755-1770, in Callander, Perthshire, Scotland, as a son of Duncan Stewart in Coilantogle. His mother is unknown. Stewarts of the South, c. 1815, identifies Duncan as the eldest surviving son of Duncan Stewart in Coilantogle and describes him as: "Duncan, a labourer to the Earl of Murray near Doune Lodge. [He has] four sons: One of them in the Earl’s service; the rest are minors." Duncan is shown as having a younger brother, John, who was an innkeeper in Doune. Duncan Stewart is identified in the Appendix to Stewarts of the South, specifically residing at Colvey and as the brother of John Stewart in Doune. Colvey/Colveny is only 2.5 km from Doune Lodge (Cambus Wallace). The Kilmadock Parish Register shows Duncan Stewart and Christian Walker having children in Colveny between 1795-1814, which matches the age range and location listed in Stewarts of the South. Duncan Stewart married on 1 Dec 1794 in Kilmadock, Perthshire, Scotland to Christian Walker. The marriage was also registered on 30 Dec 1794 in Callander, Perthshire, Scotland. They had 8 children including six sons who are the correct ages to match with the descriptions in Stewarts of the South. As Stewarts of the South identifies only four sons then two of Duncan's sons must have been deceased by 1815. Only three of his sons have been found in later records: Robert, Archibald and Peter. ----- Stewarts of the South Appendix: "8. Duncan Stewart, tenant [in] Culvui (Cuilbhuidh), of the Glenbuckie family, industrious, [on] Buchanan of Auchleshie’s property, £20 9. John Stewart, his brother, [illegible*] in Doune property and lands, a real Christian of Bowles, the above family (Glenbuckie), [on the] Earl [of] Murray’s estate, £20" (* Likely "Innkeeper" or similar. These match the descriptions of Edraleachdach 4-Line.) --- Possible births for this family: Duncan Stewart and Margaret Wright who had two recorded children: 28 Oct 1770 Agnes, dtr of Duncan STEWART and Margaret WRIGHT in Burn of Cambus. Witt. Donald McCulloch in Doun and Donald McDonald in Burn of Cambus 14 Nov 1773 Daniel, son of Duncan STEWART and Margaret WRIGHT in Drummvourish (Drumvaich or Drumloist?). Witt. George and Andrew Mc? Both in Ballacrew --- While Duncan's family has later ties to the property of Portnellan, which might suggest a familial connection to the Stewarts in Portnellan, that family is descended from the Stewarts of Gartnafuaran, not Glenbuckie, and does not align with the descriptions in Stewarts of the South which shows this family descending from the Stewarts of Glenbuckie.
