- James Stewart is estimated to have been born about 1760, probably at Cambusburn, Kilmadock, Perthshire, Scotland, as a son of John Stewart in Cambusburn, although no record of his birth has been found.
James Stewart is identified in Stewarts of the South c. 1815 as the eldest son of John Stewart, a smith at Burn of Cambus.
"John Stewart, [a] smith [at] Burn of Camus near Doune Lodge. [He had] 3 sons:
1. James, a smith and successor to his father. [He] is unmarried.
2. John, a labourer in Crieff, [who has] two sons;
3. James, a wright in Stirling, [who has] two sons [who are both] minors."
Stewarts of the South has likely made an error as John would not likely have had two sons named James. Which one is incorrectly named is unknown.
James Stewart has not been identified in any public records.
