• Notes

John Stewart was born 21 Apr 1803 in Towanacraig, Callander, Perthshire, Scotland, as a son of Alexander Stewart in Coillachra and Catharine McNaughton. Towanacraig (Downacraig) has not been found on any maps. It is believed to be a cottage on the Coillachra estate on Loch Katrine in Callander parish, Perthshire, Scotland. John Stewart has not been found in 1841. In 1851, at age 48, John Stewart was residing at 57 Duke Street in St. Mungo, Glasgow, Lanarkshire, Scotland, with his wife, Christina Stewart, age 48. He was employed as a Spirit Merchant. Also residing with them was Catherine Stewart, 57 (born in Callander, recorded as a visitor, too old to be his sister and doesn't match with his aunt Catherine Stewart), Archibald Stewart, 28 (recorded as a visitor, but suspected to be his son), Catherine McVurrich, 34 (servant), and Christina Ferguson, 10 (born in Port of Menteith, recorded as a niece, not identified in other records). In 1861, at age 58, John Stewart was residing at 57 Duke Street in Glasgow, Lanarkshire, Scotland, with his wife, Christina Stewart, 57, and Christina McGregor, 20 (possibly a daughter or granddaughter). He was employed as a Spirit Dealer. John Stewart has not been found in later census records. He may be the John Stewart, former merchant in Kingston, Jamaica, who was born 1804 and admitted on 23 Apr 1858 to the Gartnavel Royal Asylum in Lanarkshire, Scotland, with his next of kin being James Stewart, his son, residing at 17 Bank Street, Hillhead, Glasgow. No baptismal records have been found for any children of John Stewart and Christina McDonald or Morrison in either the Kilmadock or Callander parish registers.
