• Notes

**This Alexander Stewart is nearly identical to, and should not be confused with, Alexander Stewart, son of Andrew Stewart, Innkeeper at Milton of Buchanan and Margaret Marshall.** Alexander Stewart was born about 1834-1843 in Gartencaber, near Milton of Buchanan, Buchanan, Stirlingshire, Scotland, as a son of Andrew Stewart and Margaret McFarlane, although no record has been found of his birth. Census and other later records vary wildly on his year of birth making it difficult to accurately identify records pertaining to him, In 1841, at age 7 (birth given as 1834), Alexander Stewart was residing at Gartencaber, Buchanan, Stirlingshire, Scotland, with his parents and siblings. In 1851, at age 16 (birth given as 1835), Alexander Stewart was residing at Gartencaber, Buchanan, Stirlingshire, Scotland, with his parents and siblings. He was employed as a farmer's son. In 1861, at age 25 (birth given as 1836), Alexander Stewart was residing at Gartencaber, Buchanan, Stirlingshire, Scotland, with his parents and siblings. He was employed as a farm labourer. On 2 Dec 1870, Alexander Stewart married in Cardross, Dunbartonshire, Scotland to Jane Glen. She was pregnant at the time. On 20 Mar 1871, just two-and-a-half months after their marriage, Alexander Stewart and Jane Glen had a daughter Janet who died shortly after birth. In the 1871 census, at age 28 (birth given as 1843), Alexander Stewart was residing at Ardencaple Farm, in Row, Dunbartonshire, Scotland, without their daughter who was presumably already deceased. Alexander was employed as a farmer of 120 acres. Also residing with him was his elderly widowed mother, Margaret Stewart, and his bachelor brother, John Stewart. Just four months later, on 31 Jul 1871, Alexander Stewart died. "1871 Deaths in the Parish of Row in the County of Dumbarton Alexander Stewart, farmer, married to Jane Glen, died 1871, July Thirty-first, at Ardencaple Row, age 30 years, son of Andrew Stewart, farmer, deceased, and Margaret McFarlane. Informant: John McFarlane, joiner, Helenburgh?, not present."
