He is suspected to descend from Alexander Stewart in Lurg and Culgartmore by uncertain means. Or he may be Alexander Stewart, son of Duncan Stewart, Tailor in Arrachie. Alexander is described in Stewarts of the South (c. 1815) as: "Alexr Stewart, late spirit dealer in Glasgow, left two sons – Henry a clerk in Glasgow, [who is] the cleverest that we mentioned yet, if he had the balance wheel about him; David, [who is] in the Army." Alexander Stewart and his sons have not been identified in public records. Nothing more is known of this family.
