• Notes

Janet McLaws is mentioned in Stewarts of the South in reference to her late husband, Charles Stewart, Saddler in Buchlyvie, in which she is said to be keeping a public house with her son John: "Charles Stewart, late saddler in Buchlyvie, a respectable man and at one time [was] in good circumstances, who left two sons – Chas, a clerk [who works] in a Tan[nery] work in Edinr (Edinburgh), and John, who carries on the business with Mrs S[tewart], his mother, and keeps a public house. Both [of them are] unmarried." (Stewarts of the South, Section III) In her Deed of Settlement, dated at Buchlyvie, 20 Nov 1829, Janet Mclaws or Stewart, Vintner in Buchlyvie, identifies her son, Charles Stewart, former currier in Buchlyvie, and now clerk in London, as her sole heir and beneficiary. Her son John Stewart is not listed and is presumed to have predeceased her prior to 1829.
