• Notes

John Stewart was born 29 May 1653 in Arrachie Lurg, Buchanan parish, Stirlingshire, Scotland, as a son of John Stewart and Janet McFarlane. "Jo’n Stewart in arrochenerg and Jonet Mcfarland, son baptized called Jo’n. Witnesses Allex’r and Robert Stewarts in Lurgue." (Buchanan Parish Register) (Lurg is next to Callimore) In 1665, John's father acquired the estate of Calliemore on Loch Lomondside, just north of Arrachie, where John was born. John Stewart is believed to have married firstly about 1677 in Buchanan, Stirlingshire, Scotland to Mary McGregor, although no record of a marriage has been found. They had a daughter, Janet, in 1678 and no further children. As John later remarried and had another daughter named Janet then it is presumed his first wife and daughter died. John Stewart is believed to have married about 1687 in Buchanan, Stirlingshire, Scotland to Janet McInstalker, although no record of their marriage has been found. On 30 Aug 1710, John Stewart was a witness to the baptism of Duncan McFarlane, son of Donald McFarlane in Arrachieluig. "Aug 30 1710 Donald McFarlane in Erochyluig and Jean McKimi spouses had a lawful son baptized called Duncan. Witnesses George McFarlane and John Stewart." (Buchanan Parish Register) John Stewart is not found in 1714 or 1717 Buchanan Parish Examination Roll. In 1721, John Stewart is listed in the Buchanan Parish Examination Roll as residing at Tom Du on the Arrochie estate with Janet McInstalker and Duncan Stewart, believed to be his wife and son. John Stewart is believed to have died in 1722 at the age of 68 as he is not found in the Buchanan Parish Examination Roll for 1723 or thereafter. In 1723, John Stewart's widow and son Duncan are listed in the Buchanan Parish Examination Roll residing at Arrochie Beg.
