- James Stewart is estimated to have been born about 1741 in Drymen, Stirlingshire, Scotland, as a son of James Stewart and Elizabeth McFarlane, although no record of his birth has been found.
Stewarts of the South, c. 1815, describes James' father's family as:
"James Stuart, [a] Miller [at] Cubail-Larach [in] Drymen parish, [who] has five sons [who are] the stoutest and most able man in that country. One of them, Jas (James), [is] an innkeeper in Gartmore."
The description of James Sr's son, James, actually matches the description of James Jr's brother, Andrew Stewart in Back Borland and Chappellaroch. As such, it's possible that the author of Stewarts of the South made an error with the name of the son who was an innkeeper at Gartmore. Either that or James, the innkeeper, never married nor had children and therefore does not appear in later parish records and his younger brother Andrew followed him and was not mentioned in Stewarts of the South. There is insufficient evidence to prefer one possibility over the other.
