• Notes

James Stewart is estimated to have been born about 1685 in Gartmore, Port of Menteith, Perthshire, Scotland. No record of his birth has been found as his birth predates the commencement of the Port of Menteith parish register. His parents are unknown. James Stewart is presumed to have married sometime before 1707 to either Mary or Christian Watson. Baptismal records in Port of Menteith and Drymen parishes show ten children for this family with the same father in Middle Third of Gartmore or just Gartmore without specifying where in Gartmore, and later in Lead in Drymen. All but two of these baptisms show the mother's names as Mary Watson. The births of two (Margart and Mary in Middle Third) show the mother's name as Christian Watson. It's possible that there were two James Stewarts in Middle Third at the same time who each married a Watson, but it's more likely that the parish clerk made an error on the mother's name for two of the baptisms and that Mary Watson in Middle Third and Christian Watson in Middle Third are the same person, as we have shown here. James Stewart in Lead is also later identified in the marriage of his daughter Christian. "1745, July 6, Robert McNair in Duilat and Christian Stewart daughter of James Stewart in ___ Lead both parishioners listed. Their consignation in the parish of [illegible]." (Drymen Parish Register) Lead is north of Auchalty and west of Chappellaroch.
