- William Stewart's identity is not certain. He is discerned from onomastic evidence from John Stewart, miller at Milton of Killearn, and Robert Stewart in Boquhan, believed to be his brother.
John Stewart, miller at Milton of Killearn, had an eldest son, William and second daughter, Mary, suggesting that his parents' names were likely William and Mary. His first daughter Jean's baptism was witnessed by Robert Stewart in Boquhan. Parish records in Killearn to not show any Robert Stewart in that time period, however Boquhan is less than half a kilometre from the parish boundary with Balfron, and Boquhan is less than two kilometres from the Village of Balfron. The Balfron parish register shows a Robert Stewart and Margaret Stirling having a family with an eldest (lawful) son named William and second daughter named Mary. They had an illegitimate son John whose name may be exempted from the traditional naming pattern. It is not confirmed that the Robert Stewart who had a family with Margaret Stirling is in fact Robert Stewart in Boquhan, nor is it confirmed that he is the brother of John Stewart in Milton of Killearn. It is only a working theory at this point.
