| Notes |
- The earliest confirmed ancestor of the Stewarts in Portnellan is John Stewart, born c. 1690, shown as the brother of this Thomas Stewart. John Stewart had a son was named Thomas and all of his children's baptisms (from what is believed to be his second marriage) were witnessed by Thomas Stewart in Drunkie. It is suggested that the Thomas Stewart in Drunkie who witnessed the baptisms is most likely John's brother.
As the parish of Port of Menteith did not commence recording baptisms until 1698, then confirming this generation or earlier generations of this family is nearly impossible.
Stewarts of the South accounts for the Stewarts in Portnellan as VII-Branch of the Stewarts of Gartnafuaran but does not indicate who they descend from. Thus, all that can be said with certainty of the their ancestry is that they descend from some earlier branch of the Stewarts of Gartnafuaran prior to the mid-17th century.
