• Notes

Walter Stewart was born 29 May 1684 in Rouskenachie, Buchanan, Stirlingshire, Scotland, on the eastern shore of Loch Lomand as a younger son of John Stewart, 1st of Calliemore, and Janet McFarlane. His exact location of birth appears to be Rouskenachie but is uncertain as the parish register is very difficult to read. "Jo’n Stewart in Rouskenachie (uncertain) and Jonet McFarland had a son Walter. Witnesses Jo’n McThomas and Jo’n McFarland." (Buchanan Parish Register) Walter Stewart is believed to be the most recent common ancestor for cadet lines 3, 4, 5, 6 & 7 of the Stewarts in Calliemore. He is believed, but not confirmed, to be the same Walter Stewart who married on 16 Oct 1684 in Buchanan, Stirlingshire, Scotland to Helen Buchanan. Their marriage is recorded on the same date in both Buchanan and Drymen parishes with both notices claiming them to be "of this parish" so it is difficult to be sure which parish is the actual parish of origin for the bride or groom. The entry in the Buchanan Parish register for 16 Oct 1684 reads, "Walter Stewart and Hellen Buchanan, both in this parish gave up y’r names in order to marriage with consent of friends." The entry in the Drymen Parish Register is damaged and difficult to read, but says, "July 3 1684, Oct 16, Walter Stewart and ~ellen (Hellen) Buchanan both in this paroch gave up y’r names in order to marriage with consent of [illegible]." Neither record gives a home location for either the bride or the groom. There are only two recorded births for a Walter Stewart anywhere in Stirlingshire between 1640-1670 who could be the Walter Stewart who married Helen Buchanan (assuming his birth is recorded) -- the one shown here and a second one born 16 Dec 1662 as the son of Ludovic Stewart and Katherine Stewart. This one is an omomastic match and the son of Ludovic is not. Helen Buchanan was born 20 Mar 1659 in Buchanan, Stirlingshire, Scotland as the daughter of George Buchanan and Isabel Nobel. Her father, George Buchanan, is suspected, but not confirmed, to be the youngest son of George Buchanan, 3rd of Auchmar, and Janet Stewart, daughter of Andrew Stewart of Blairgarry. Such a marriage would be consistent with the marriage of Robert Stewart, 2nd of Coillemore (shown here as Walter's oldest brother), and Margery Buchanan, daughter of George's nephew, John Buchanan, 5th of Auchmar, and the multiple ties between the Buchanans of Auchmar and cadets of the Stewarts of Gartnafuaran. No baptismal records have survived for any of their children so their children's identities must be discerned from other records and their dates of birth can only be estimated. Walter Stewart is recorded in Drymen Kirk Session Minutes as residing in Easter Blarnavaid and as being the father of George Stewart in Blarnavaid and John Stewart in Spittal of Blarnavaid. These two sons are consistent with the traditional naming pattern of naming sons after their grandfathers, John Stewart and George Buchanan. As there are no records of the births of sons, George Stewart and John Stewart, we cannot be certain of their birth order. Walter Stewart's date and location of death is unknown as no record has been found of his death. --- 1722 Drymen Kirk Session Minutes: “Jan 21st 1722, Jonat McAuley being summoned as appointed compeared and Dilator George Stewart son of Walter Stewart in Easter Blarnavaid as father of her child grayson(?)." 1726 Drymen Kirk Session Minutes. “October 9th 1726 – The which day Mary McFarlane being cited and compeared and deponed yt (that) she was with child to John Stewart, son to Walter Stewart in Blarnavaid."
